At the age of 15, during the French and Indian War, Chief Joseph Brant took part with the Mohawk and other Iroquois allies in a number of British actions against the French. He was one of only 182 First Nations that got awarded a silver medal from the British. Brant was one of the three Mohawks to be selected to get educated at Eleazar Wheelock's Moor's Indian Charity School located in Connecticut. Chief Joseph Brant worked under the guidance of Wheelock and learned to read, write and speak in English. Later on, Brant met Samuel Kirkland at the school, who is a missionary to Indians in western New York. Johnson prepared Brant in 1763 to attend King's College in New York City. Then, he returned home to avoid hospitality from the Native Americans. After, Pontiac's rebellion, Johnson thought it wasn't safe to send Joseph Brant to King's College.
